Poem: Diversity

I do not exist to fulfill some diversity requirement,

to

“add some color” to a white-washed environment

Regardless of whether I know my life’s purpose

I’m not here to provide you that service

And normally I’d say “go look elsewhere”

But I don’t think there’s a person out there

That likes being reduced to numbers & colors

that likes being put in the category of other

I know our problems of “us” & “them”

stem

from a history too long to explain

one

riddled in terror & pain

But,

we are not in the past anymore

And honestly it’s about time we move for-

ward

so, I said it once and I’ll say it again,

Do not categorize me by the color of my skin.
